Rex Ryan Doesn't Care Who Plays QB For Patriots In Week 4

Sep 26, 2016 8:21 AM

We don't yet know who will start at quarterback for the New England Patriots against the Buffalo Bills this weekend, but Rex Ryan doesn't sound concerned.

"I can sit back and say I don't care who plays quarterback, because [Tom] Brady ain't," Ryan said. "I don't care who plays quarterback. Steve Grogan can play quarterback. If [Bill] Belichick's playing quarterback, we're coming after him, I promise you that."

Ryan made the comments after Buffalo's 33-18 win over the Arizona Cardinals -- the team's first win of the season.

Tom Brady has one more game left on his four-game suspension. Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) and Jacoby Brissett (thumb), who combined to start the first three games, are uncertain for the Bills game.

Jacoby Brissett Sprains Right Thumb

Sep 25, 2016 12:07 PM

Jacoby Brissett suffered a sprained right thumb in the New England Patriots' Week 3 win over the Houston Texans.

Brissett started for the Patriots with Tom Brady suspended and Jimmy Garoppolo injured.

The team is weighing its options on how to proceed with Brissett, but the injury is "not deemed to be a serious one."

Garoppolo could potentially be healthy by then if Brissett can't play. Julian Edelman also knows the position and could have been used in an emergency on Thursday night.

Rob Gronkowski Expected To Play In Week 3

Sep 22, 2016 5:48 PM

Rob Gronkowski has told teammates he's planning on making his 2016 debut in Week 3.

Gronkowski hurt his hamstring in August and has been a limited participant in practices since the start of the regular season.

Gronkowski could help Jacoby Brissett in his first start as a big target.

The New England Patriots are preparing Julian Edelman to be their emergency quarterback against the Houston Texans on Thursday night.

Sep 21, 2016 11:18 AM

The New England Patriots are reportedly putting pressure on Jimmy Garoppolo to play in Week 3 despite a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.

Garoppolo returned to practice with the Patriots on Tuesday on a limited basis.

Garoppolo is still struggling to lift his right arm.

The Patriots have reminded Garoppolo Tom Brady played through a similar injury on multiple occasions throughout his career.

Jimmy Garoppolo Likely Out Six Weeks With Shoulder Injury

Sep 19, 2016 3:23 PM

Jimmy Garoppolo landed hard on his right throwing shoulder in the second quarter of Week 2.

Garoppolo initially attempted to play through the injury before kneeling on one knee after absorbing the hit.

Garoppolo had been on fire, leading the Patriots to touchdowns on their first three possessions as they took a 21-0 lead. He was 18 of 27 for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns at the time of the injury.

Garoppolo will likely need six weeks for the injury to heal and has already been ruled out for Week 3.

Tom Brady will return from his suspension after Week 4.

Tom Brady Recruits Wes Welker As Throwing Partner

Sep 16, 2016 12:15 PM

Tom Brady recruited Wes Welker as a throwing partner this weekend as he continues to serve his four-game suspension.

"It was funny. I hit him up [because] I'm actually heading up to the game [Saturday], and I hit him up to do dinner Saturday night," Welker said. "[Brady] was like 'I'm going to be flying in from Ann Arbor later, but hey, how about that morning we go throw?' And I'm just sitting there, like, 'I was just thinking about dinner, but yeah, sure.' I'll get over there early and we can throw a little bit. That's the only thing we really have planned."

Brady is being honored at the University of Michigan this weekend.

Brady is prohibited from engaging in any football-related activities or discussions with current teammates at or away from the Patriots' facilities, which even includes working out or playing catch.

Welker appeared in eight games last season with the Rams and had 13 catches.

Rob Gronkowski Earning Praise For Mental Part Of Playing Tight End

Sep 15, 2016 11:31 AM

Rob Gronkowski is known as one of the NFL's most physically dominant offensive weapons and for being a partier off the field but he also plays the tight end position at a high level intellectually.

“The tight end position is, probably after quarterback, the hardest position to play in our offense," said Bill Belichick. "That’s the guy who does all the formationing. The running back is usually in the backfield. The receivers are receivers. But the tight ends could be in their tight end location, they could be in the backfield, they could be flexed. They could be in the wide position. To formation the defense, those are the guys you’re going to move. It’s moving the tight ends that changes the defensive deployment.”

Belichick has long been impressed by how he understands the game.

“Rob is a versatile athlete, but he’s also a versatile guy mentally. He can handle a lot of different assignments. Some guys can’t. Either they mentally can’t do it, or it’s just too much and their game slows down. They don’t play to the same skill set you see athletically because they’re thinking too much. That’s not the case with Rob.”

“Many, many times you have to be a football mind,” said Gronkowski. “I’ve seen a lot of athletic juggernauts throughout high school, college, even the NFL who can’t play the game. When you first get [to the league], it’s learning a whole new language. You have to learn the playbook inside and out. You have to learn code words for each play. You have to learn defenses. You have to just have football knowledge. Without football knowledge, it doesn’t matter how much skill you have.”

Patriots Didn't Adjust Offense At All For Jimmy Garoppolo

Sep 13, 2016 7:29 PM

The New England Patriots didn't change their offense at all during the first NFL start of Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo completed 72.7 percent of his passes (24-of-33) for 264 yards and a score in the Week 1 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Garoppolo showcased his quick release, pocket management and ability to run the Patriots' offense with efficiency similar to Tom Brady.

The underneath routes to Julian Edelman, the play-action, the pick routes and the combination concepts that create space for receivers to work were effective with Garoppolo.
