Alex Smith Doesn't Think Chiefs Are Committed To Him Beyond 2017

May 19, 2017 8:03 AM

Alex Smith has acknowledged that his time as Kansas City's starting quarterback might soon be finished.

Smith made his first public comments since the Chiefs traded up in the first round to draft Patrick Mahomes II.

The Chiefs view the rookie as an eventual replacement for Smith, who has two seasons left on his contract.

"I think [the Chiefs are] committed to me [only] through this year," Smith said. "That's just the nature of it. If you don't go out there and perform, I mean, coach [Andy] Reid and [quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy] are very honest. You've got to go out there and do your deal. We all have to.

"Whether or not we drafted Patrick, it doesn't change that, right? If you're not good enough and didn't get it done, you're not going to be around long. That's just our culture. I know it. That's the nature of the position."

Smith likened it to when the San Francisco 49ers drafted Colin Kaepernick in 2011.

"There is a little similarity," said Smith, who turned 33 earlier this month. "I'm an older quarterback, and they drafted a kid that's coming in young and they're looking to develop."

Patrick Mahomes Uninjured After Being Robbed

May 16, 2017 10:24 AM

Patrick Mahomes II was uninjured after being robbed Friday, according to the Smith County Sheriff's office in Texas.

"We believe this offense was a completely random act and the suspect had no idea who he was robbing," Sgt. Darrell Coslin said. "He wasn't being targeted or anything."

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Mahomes out of Texas Tech with the 10th pick in the NFL draft last month.

"[Mahomes] and some of his friends had been out to a baseball game earlier that evening here in Tyler [Texas]," Coslin said. "After the baseball game was over, he and his friends returned to one of the residences. They had pulled into the driveway and were exiting the vehicle when a suspect pulled in behind them and blocked them in. He exited his vehicle and approached them on foot, acting as if he was armed with a handgun.

"The suspect then demanded property from the four victims and after the robbery was complete he got in his vehicle and left the location. No one was injured. At that point in time we received a 911 call reporting the incident. We had a deputy respond to the location. After obtaining the suspect's vehicle information and the suspect's description, deputies were able to locate the suspect's vehicle a short distance away. The property from the victims was found in the suspect's vehicle so it was recovered."

Patrick Mahomes On Playbook: 'A Lot Harder Than I Thought'

May 8, 2017 9:20 AM

Patrick Mahomes has spent just a few days with the Kansas City Chiefs, but he's already a little overwhelmed by the team's playbook.

"It's a lot more than I had at Texas Tech," Mahomes said. "Whenever I got up there and called it, then I had to look out there and see the guys and make sure everybody was in the right position. That was pretty much the process, and it was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be."

Alex Smith is expected to remain the starter for the Chiefs as Mahomes develops.

Jamaal Charles To Meet With Broncos

May 1, 2017 8:16 PM

Jamaal Charles will meet with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday.

Charles is a free agent after spending his entire career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Charles had arthroscopic surgery on both knees last season, which prompted the move to injured reserve. The Chiefs could have activated Charles and moved him to the active roster for their final regular-season game, but they chose not to.
