Alex Smith Feels 'Sense Of Urgency' From Andy Reid

Jan 30, 2017 8:33 AM

After another playoff loss, Alex Smith says he feels a "sense of urgency" from Andy Reid as the Kansas City Chiefs try to take the next step in the postseason.

"We've talked a lot, and for sure, the talk was just the sense of urgency -- [him saying] 'let's go get it, you and me,'" Smith said. "For both of us, I think you realize the opportunities are less and less. You can't take them all for granted. We all felt like we had an awesome opportunity and we didn't get it done. So even more so, let's press on the gas and let's go."

Colts Hire Chris Ballard As General Manager

Jan 30, 2017 9:02 PM

The Indianapolis Colts have found a replacement for Ryan Grigson.

The Colts have named Chris Ballard their new general manager. Grigson was fired Jan. 21 after five seasons with the organization.

"Chris has a solid reputation throughout the National Football League as a heavyweight executive and our extensive discussions with him confirmed that reputation," Jim Irsay said in a statement. "He's a savvy, organized, and thorough talent evaluator, but beyond that, he's a terrific person our community will be proud of."

Ballard joined the Kansas City Chiefs as director of player personnel in 2013 and was later promoted to director of football operations.

The Colts, who will have more than $50 million in salary-cap space during free agency, are coming off back-to-back seasons in which they missed the playoffs with 8-8 records.

Chiefs Want To Use Tyreek Hill More Often In 2017

Jan 27, 2017 8:38 AM

Tyreek Hill scored 12 touchdowns as a rookie and the Kansas City Chiefs want even more next season.

Andy Reid says the Chiefs plan on using Hill more and they also expect him to be more productive with those extra touches.

"We use him a lot on special teams obviously," Reid said. "When he came to us, that's what we originally thought we had. He then said, 'Listen I can do this offensive thing.' He's innately a smart kid. We kept adding to it and he got it.

"I'd expect him to learn that whole [playbook] by the end of all the OTAs and training camp and then be even more of a threat."

Steelers-Chiefs Draws Record Audience For Primetime

Jan 16, 2017 2:51 PM

The NBC-only broadcast of Steelers-Chiefs, the first-ever Sunday NFL Playoff game to kick off after 8 p.m. ET, averaged 37.1 million viewers – ranking as the most-watched primetime game ever in the NFL’s Divisional and Wild Card Playoff rounds. TV viewership for Steelers-Chiefs peaked at 39.1 million from 9-9:30 p.m. ET.

Sunday's viewership topped by 8% the prior primetime NFL Wild Card/Divisional Playoff record set three years ago by NBC’s Saints-Eagles NFC Wild Card telecast (34.4 million viewers on Jan. 4, 2014) and was 10% higher than NBC’s primetime Saturday Divisional Playoff game last year (33.7 million for Packers-Cardinals).

The start time was moved due to an ice storm in Kansas City.

Travis Kelce On Two-Point Conversion: That Wasn't A Hold

Jan 16, 2017 7:44 AM

Travis Kelce didn't hold back in his criticism of referee Carl Cheffers for the holding penalty that cost the Kansas City Chiefs what would have been the tying two-point conversion late in their 18-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night.

"Referee No. 51 shouldn't even be able to wear a zebra jersey ever again," Kelce said. "He shouldn't even be able to work at f---ing Foot Locker."

Alex Smith agreed with Kelce.

"I've seen a lot worse not called," Smith said.

Cheffers called Eric Fisher for holding on the play that momentarily tied the game. Kansas City failed to get the two-point conversion after being pushed back to the 12-yard line. Pittsburgh kept the ball for the rest of the game after the kickoff.

"For it to end like that, with the referee literally taking it out of our hands, that hurts," Kelce said. "You try to play this game with integrity, to the end of the whistle, and when the refs want to take over the game and make it their own platform, there's nothing you can do about it. That wasn't a hold on my guy Eric Fisher. I hope [Fisher] doesn't go the entire offseason thinking it was his fault. That was horses---, flat out."

Chiefs-Steelers Moved To Primetime To Avoid Ice Storm

Jan 13, 2017 3:53 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have moved the start time for their divisional round playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers to 8:20 PM ET.

The game was supposed to begin at 1:05 p.m. ET.

The worst of a winter storm that is predicted to dump as much as a half-inch of ice on Kansas City will pass through the area early on Sunday.

"Moving the game from the original 1:05 p.m. ET start time will provide local authorities more time to clear roads in the area as the weather is expected to improve throughout Sunday,'' the statement said.

"The decision to make this time change was made in consultation with state and local officials as well as the Chiefs and the Steelers.''

The Steelers said in a statement they have been monitoring Kansas City-area weather and "fully support the NFL's decision to move the game to Sunday night."

Chiefs Will Attempt To Extend Andy Reid In Offseason

Jan 9, 2017 11:15 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs will attempt to sign Andy Reid to a contract extension in the offseason.

Reid will be entering the final year of his contract next season, and teams usually prefer not to have their head coaches, particularly successful ones, head into the last year of their deal.

Reid is 43-21 with the Chiefs and 173-114 overall, including his 14 years as head coach of the Eagles.

Reid initially signed a five-year deal with the Chiefs in 2013.

Andy Reid Compares Tyreek Hill To DeSean Jackson

Jan 5, 2017 7:51 AM

For the second time in his coaching career, Andy Reid has a dynamic rookie on offense that can impact the game in multiple ways.

Tyreek Hill became the first rookie in NFL history to score a touchdown of 65 or more yards in four straight games with a 95-yard punt return in Week 17.

"A lot of guys have speed, but can't corner, they don't have the quickness that he has. He has a unique blend there. He's fun to watch," Reid said.

Reid also coached DeSean Jackson as a rookie in Philadelphia.

"I had DeSean Jackson and he kind of was the same," Reid explained. "When he was young he did all of the return stuff, we moved him all around the offense, he took snaps as a quarterback, we had him everywhere. He made it to the Pro Bowl in two different positions -- as a wide receiver and a returner."

No Teams Finish 2016 In Top-10 In Both Offensive, Defensive DVOA

Jan 3, 2017 2:01 PM

The NFL has very few teams this season that excel in all facets of the game. Further evidence of this issue shows itself in the fact that there is only one team ranking in the top-10 in both Football Outsiders' Offensive and Defensive DVOA.

Last season, the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs ranked in the top-10 on both sides of the ball.

The Chiefs were the closest team to finish in the top-10 in both Offensive and Defensive DVOA at 13th and 14th.

The New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys finished the season ranked first and second in both Total DVOA and Weighted DVOA.
