NFL Denies Jaguars' Request For Early Offseason Workouts

Mar 29, 2017 8:10 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars will begin their offseason workouts on April 17, despite requesting to start working out as a team two weeks earlier.

NFL teams with returning head coaches can only begin working out on April 17, while those with new coaches can start on April 3. The Jaguars promoted interim coach Doug Marrone to replace Gus Bradley in January.

The league initially granted the Jaguars an extra week, saying they could start April 10. But the NFL Players Association challenged the ruling and won.

Blake Bortles Working On Quicker Release, Other Tweaks

Mar 20, 2017 7:16 PM

Blake Bortles has spent the last two months working on his mechanics at 3DQB in California instead of worrying about whether the Jacksonville Jaguars view him as their quarterback long-term.

The Jaguars have until May 3 to decide if they will pick up Bortles' fifth-year option, which would carry a 2018 salary north of $20 million. It is guaranteed for injury only until the first day of the 2018 league year, when it becomes fully guaranteed.

"It's huge," Bortles said. "It's as big as however you want it to be, but regardless we've got to be here on April 10th [for offseason conditioning] and we've got to show up for camp in August and eventually they're going to start playing football games, so I think all that's stuff's irrelevant.

"I'm confident with what I've done this offseason and that I'll be able to come help this team be as good as we possibly can be. Everything involving the contract, that's up to them. I look forward to playing football."

Dave Caldwell said the team still has work to do in evaluating Bortles before making that kind of commitment.

Calais Campbell Agrees To Four-Year, $60M Deal With Jaguars

Mar 9, 2017 5:41 PM

Calais Campbell has agreed to sign a four-year, $60 million deal with the Jackson Jaguars with $30 million in guaranteed money.

"Chose Jags because Tom Coughlin is a winner, they brought in two other big free agents and they also have been drafting well the last few years," Campbell told ESPN's Josina Anderson. "They are a young and hungry defense that I want to lead."

Campbell, 30, flourished in 2016 with the addition of Chandler Jones to the Cardinals' front seven, putting together one of the best all-around seasons of his career during a contract year. He had 53 tackles, 8 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles and 1 interception that he returned for a touchdown.
