Andrew Luck has signed a six-year deal worth nearly $140 million with the Indianapolis Colts through 2021.

Luck will earn $75 million over the first three seasons of the deal and slightly less over the final two.

Luck will now be the NFL's highest paid player.

There will be $89 million in guaranteed money in Luck's deal.

Former NFL running back Zurlon Tipton has died after a gun in his car was accidentally discharged.

Tipton pulled into the service bay at a Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership in Roseville, Michigan on Tuesday morning. He went to take a duffel bag out of the trunk of his vehicle, and one of the two guns inside the bag reportedly went off. He was struck in the stomach. Tipton was taken to the hospital in good condition, but later died.

Tipton, who was 26, was signed by the Colts after going undrafted in the 2014 NFL draft. He was waved by the Colts on December 21, 2015.

Andrew Luck missed nine games in 2015 and struggled when he was on the field for the Indianapolis Colts.

The quarterback wasn't happy with his play and production even before injuries derailed him.

"Injuries aside, I was not playing very good football -- before they happened," Luck said. "I've got to be better. Toward my last couple games, I felt like I was playing much better, trending in the right direction."

In seven games, Luck completed 55.3 percent of his passes (worst mark since his rookie season), had a 15-12 TD-to-INT ratio and a career-low 74.9 passer rating.

The Indianapolis Colts want to see Andrew Luck protect himself more during games, specifically when he's running out of the pocket.

He suffered a lacerated kidney last season while scrambling.

Luck has been sliding to the turf when he takes off and runs during practices this offseason.

"He's reluctantly accepting it," left tackle Anthony Castonzo said. "I think we've all been in his ear, like, 'Dude, when you get out of the pocket, you need to slide.'"

Andrew Luck believes his contract extension with the Indianapolis Colts will get done without drama.

"I know I'm a Colt and I'm going to do the best job I can for this team no matter what the situation is. So it doesn't weigh on me," Luck said.

Jim Irsay said Wednesday that he would be "surprised" if the Colts did not agree to a long-term contract extension with Luck before the team reports to training camp in late July.

"As far as the importance of getting it done or not, if it happens [before training camp], great," Luck said. "If it doesn't happen [before training camp], great too. I know I'm a Colt and I'm going to do the best job I can for this team, no matter what the situation is. So it doesn't weigh on me."

Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts continue to make progress on extension talks. The sides are expected to sign a deal before the start of camp.

Luck is unlikely to accept anything less than the $22.13 million annual average Joe Flacco signed.

Luck is slated to make $16.155 million on his fifth-year option in 2016, the final year of his rookie deal.

If the Colts were to use back-to-back exclusive franchise tags in 2017 and 2018, Luck would net $25 million and $35 million. That three-year, $76 million figure may serve as the basis for talks.
