Panthers Made Blockbuster Offer To Colts For Peyton Manning In 1998

Feb 1, 2016 1:32 PM

The Carolina Panthers attempted to trade for Peyton Manning ahead of the 1998 NFL Draft.

The Panthers offered Kerry Collins and multiple draft picks to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for Manning

Bill Polian had drafted Collins just three years earlier when he was GM of the Panthers.

"Bill was dead set against it," said Dom Capers, Carolina's head coach at the time who was also given control of personnel decisions when Polian left the team after the 1997 season.

"He was set on keeping the pick. You never know on those kinds of things — but sometimes you have to try."

Polian said trading Manning was never a consideration.

"There wasn't anything they could give us that was going to replace Peyton Manning," Polian said.

Team With Better Defense 10-7 In Brady-Manning Games

Jan 26, 2016 1:16 PM

The team with the better defense is 10-7 in the 17 Brady-Manning games.

The better defense is the one defined as being better by Football Outsiders.

Tom Brady had the better defense 10 times in his head-to-head meetings compared to seven for Manning.

Brady has won seven times with the better defense and four times with the worse defense, while Manning has won three times with the better defense and three times with the worse defense.

The Patriots won the first six Brady-Manning matchups and had the better defense in all of them.

Colts Fire Defensive Coordinator Greg Manusky

Jan 5, 2016 11:20 PM

The Indianapolis Colts have fired defensive coordinator Greg Manusky.

Manusky joined the Colts with Chuck Pagano in 2012.

"We've had a bunch of discussions, like I said, and we've got a lot of things like everybody else that's done playing," Chuck Pagano said. "There are teams obviously that are still in preparation (mode); the teams that made the playoffs, obviously. But everybody else is still in the evaluation mode now, and we're going to roll up our shirtsleeves and go to work. And, again, everything we do is based on two things: What's best for this team and what gives us the best chance to win."

The Colts' defense under Manusky and Pagano hasn't been solid during their three-year stint together. The unit improved from 2014, but still finished 27th in total yards per game (379.1) and 25th in points per game allowed (25.5) in 2015.
