Bill O'Brien Taking Over Play-Calling For Texans

Sep 30, 2016 11:39 AM

Bill O'Brien will call plays on offense for the Houston Texans, taking those duties away from offensive coordinator George Godsey.

O'Brien called plays during his first season with the team in 2014, but gave the duty to Godsey last year.

The Texans added offense this offseason, signing quarterback Brock Osweiler, running back Lamar Miller and drafting wide receiver Will Fuller in the first round.

"We really have to go back as a coaching staff and really look at what we did, learn from it, and try to fix it," O'Brien said. "We really need to put our heads together and get after it and get better for the next game, no doubt about it."

Bill O'Brien Would Like To See Shorter Preseason

Sep 6, 2016 8:33 AM

Bill O'Brien believes the NFL plays too many preseason games.

The Houston Texans coach says four preseason games is too many. O'Brien pointed out on PFT Live that teams cut their rosters from 90 players to 75 players before the fourth preseason game, then from 75 to 53 after the fourth preseason game. He thinks it would make more sense to just have one cut from 90 to 53 after the third preseason game, and scrap the fourth preseason game.

"I do believe that if we could go to two or three preseason games, I do think that would help," O'Brien said. "When you think back to last year, and we talked about maybe eliminating the 75 cut and just having one cut, I do think that would help. I think you go into that last game really know for the most part who your team is going to be. It's difficult because you don't have a ton of players available to you in that fourth preseason game. My opinion would be we could get it done in two or three preseason games, but again, I'm not in the decision-making role, that's just my opinion."

J.J. Watt could play in the Houston Texans' Week 1 opener as he comes back from herniated disc surgery.

Watt played through a handful of core muscle injuries in 2015.

"We are headed in the right direction with him," Bill O'Brien said. "It looks decent for him to be able to play in the first game."

Watt has won Defensive Player of the Year honors in three separate seasons.
