Texans Keeping QB Competition 'Wide Open'

Nov 22, 2014 10:11 PM

The Houston Texans' starting quarterback job is "wide open" as they begin OTAs.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and rookie Tom Savage participated on Tuesday.

“These guys are good guys, they’ve been fun to coach,” Bill O’Brien said. “(Quarterbacks coach) George Godsey’s done a great job with them. And I think they’ve enjoyed learning this offense and they’re competing. It looks like there’s good chemistry in the room, which is important in the quarterback room. I’ve been impressed with these guys, the way they work at it.”

Andre Johnson Misses OTA As Expected

Oct 6, 2014 9:38 PM

Andre Johnson was a no-show during the Houston Texans' organized team activities on Tuesday.

Johnson's absence was expected and it confirmed that he remains at odds with the front office.

Johnson said May 13 he planned to miss OTAs and the Texans’ mandatory camp in June.

“We’d love to have him here. … It’s up to him,” said Bill O’Brien, who stuck to his talking points about Johnson and again praised the veteran’s contributions to the team.

Bills Wanted To Move Up To No. 1 To Select Sammy Watkins

May 21, 2014 12:40 AM

The Buffalo Bills were so enamored by Sammy Watkins that they attempted to move up all the way to No. 1 to ensure they were able to select him.

The Bills eventually moved up from No. 9 to No. 4 to select Watkins, giving up their first round pick next season and a fourth rounder as well.

“We went with Houston right off the bat,” Bills' director of player personnel Jim Monos said. “We tried to go to No. 1. They weren’t having it. They knew who they wanted, so we started working our way right down.”

The Browns called before the Texans submitted their pick for Jadeveon Clowney to confirm that the Bills were still interested. The Bills were unsure what the Jacksonville Jaguars were thinking with the No. 3 pick.

“We really didn’t know,” Monos said. “Jacksonville never tipped it. We had just heard so much that they needed a receiver. We thought that this was going to be Sammy. We knew that if Jacksonville didn’t take him we had a shot.”

Andre Johnson Unsure If He Wants To Remain With Texans

Oct 30, 2014 12:21 PM

Andre Johnson is unsure if he wants to remain with the Houston Texans.

"When you've been somewhere or a long time, nobody's been here as long as I have," Johnson said just after presenting a check to the Houston Area Women's Center. "I've been thinking about things this offseason. Kind of wonder if this is still the place for me."

Johnson was a first round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Texans.

Johnson said he has no plans right now to participate in organized team activities or the Texans' mandatory minicamp in June. He added that he has not asked for a trade.

"Now I'm on my third head coach, that's something I give thought to," Johnson said. "I just look over my career, is it a place? I've only been to the playoffs twice. I think we've only had three winning seasons, two 8-8 seasons. I don't think any player wants to experience that.

"... You go through a rebuilding process, some people say it's not rebuilding, some people say it's a quick fix. Everybody has their own opinion. But I've been through this more than once. When I make my decision, I'll make my decision."

Jadeveon Clowney Signs Endorsement Deal With Puma

Nov 15, 2014 4:20 PM

Jadeveon Clowney has signed an endorsement deal with Puma.

"I just want to be a part of something different," Clowney told ESPN.com on Wednesday night. "Why not change it up?"

Clowney cannot wear cleats with the Puma logo on the field because the company doesn't have a direct deal with the NFL.

"He represents everything we are and the consumer we are trying to attract," said Jay Piccola, president of Puma North America, who presented Clowney with custom snakeskin Puma shoes valued at $2,500.

Clowney joins Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman and Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles as other Puma endorsers in the league.

Texans Reach Decision On Top Overall Pick If They Keep It

May 19, 2014 11:27 PM

The Houston Texans have decided who they will select first overall if they keep the first overall pick.

"I know the order of our board. If we select first, it's a unique opportunity to be the first pick," said Rick Smith. "If we do select there, I know who we feel good about there. If we move, then obviously there are variables that come into play at that point."

ESPN's Todd McShay and Mel Kiper both have the Texans selecting South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney with the first pick in their latest mock drafts.

The Texans are still considering trading the pick.
