Josh Gordon Could Face One-Year Suspension

Jan 26, 2015 12:48 PM

Josh Gordon tested positive for alcohol and will now be subject to a one-year suspension.

"Clearly we are very disappointed to hear the latest report regarding Josh," the Browns said in a statement. "At this point, due to the confidential nature of the NFL's substance-abuse policy, we have not been made aware by the league of a failed test. We are in the process of gathering more information and will provide further comment at the appropriate time."

Gordon was arrested on July 5, 2014, and charged with driving while impaired after speeding down a street in Raleigh, North Carolina. Gordon was previously suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Gordon would have been suspended for all of 2014 were it not for a new drug testing and punishment policy the NFL implemented that allowed him to return after missing the first 10 games.

Gordon caught 24 passes for 303 yards in five games this season. He led the NFL with 1,646 yards in just 14 games in the 2013 season.

Haslam: Browns Need To Get A Quarterback

Jan 23, 2015 1:52 PM

Jimmy Haslam hasn't ruled out starting Johnny Manziel at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in 2015, but he also said "every option is on the table."

The Browns also started Brian Hoyer and Connor Shaw at quarterback this season.

"We've got to get a quarterback and got to get it fixed," Haslam said Thursday night, via the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram. "What I would say to our fans is, we're going to continue to work really hard to find that quarterback who can make us a championship team."

The Browns used a first round pick on Manziel last year.

"Johnny has to show on and off the field he can be a professional," Haslam said. "He knows that. Everybody in the organization has told him that. It'll be up to Flip and (coach Mike Pettine) to decide whether he can be the kind of quarterback we need him to be. He knows what we expect of him on and off the field, and it's up to him to prove he can do that."

DeFilippo Unsure If Browns Already Have Their QB On Roster

Jan 22, 2015 4:58 PM

John DeFilippo said he's unsure if the Cleveland Browns have their quarterback already on the roster.

DeFilippo was hired this week as offensive coordinator.

"We're not sure if our starting quarterback is in the building right now or not," said DeFilippo, who was hired Wednesday to replace Kyle Shanahan. "If he is, great. If he's not, that's great too."

Mike Pettine said the Browns will continue evaluating the roster and discussing all positions over the next few weeks.

DeFilippo met Johnny Manziel before last year's draft and said he's ready and eager to work with him.

"He flew out to Oakland and [I] spent a day with him," DeFilippo said. "Can you get an overview on a guy in a day? No. But you can get a grasp of what he thinks and how he's feeling and those things."

NFL Investigating Potential Texts To Browns' Sideline During Games

Jan 10, 2015 4:44 PM

The NFL is investigating whether text messages were sent to the Cleveland Browns' sideline during games.

Texting would be a violation of the NFL's rules prohibiting electronic communication during games.

Signora did not elaborate except to say the league is looking into the matter.

"We are reviewing internally and will fully cooperate with the NFL on this matter," the Browns said in a statement.

Cleveland.com originally reported the text messages were sent and said it was one issue in former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan leaving the team. He perceived it as interference from the front office regarding coaching decisions.

Browns Open To Re-Signing Brian Hoyer

Jan 2, 2015 1:20 PM

The Cleveland Browns would like to re-sign Brian Hoyer if he wants to again compete for the starting quarterback job with Johnny Manziel.

"If he wants to be back, that leverage is definitely in his court to make that happen," Ray Farmer said, via The Plain Dealer. "Assuming that we could agree to that deal, then that opportunity's available. If we can't come to that agreement, then he obviously would not be back. There's a lot of work to be done in that regard."

Mike Pettine sounded an ominous tone about the possibility of Hoyer returning to his hometown for another season.

"He was a big part of our success this year," Pettine said, "but it's something that I just don't know if the circumstances can come together for him to be back here next year."

Hoyer has made it clear that he has no interest in holding the clipboard for Manziel.

"Once you've played," Hoyer explained, "you don't want to sit on the bench."
