Jimmy Haslam, owner of the Cleveland Browns, confirmed Sunday in a comment to USA Today that there was some dialogue with the San Francisco 49ers about Jim Harbaugh.
"There was an opportunity there, and it didn't materialize," Haslam said.
Harbaugh revealed during a press conference on Jan. 21 after the 49ers were eliminated by the Seattle Seahawks that he had spoken with the Browns "regarding our coaches."
The 49ers denied the Pro Football Talk report on Friday that the club nearly traded Harbaugh to the Browns for draft picks.
Team CEO Jed York wrote on Twitter, “Report isn’t true.”
In a text message to CSN Bay Area’s Dave Feldman, Harbaugh wrote, “For the record, I echo Jed York’s comment…’isn’t true.’ I know nothing about a trade with the Cleveland Browns and us involving me.”
Harbaugh has two years remaining on the five-year, $25 million contract he signed in January 2011.
The Cleveland Browns nearly traded with the San Francisco 49ers for Jim Harbaugh, according to multiple sources.
The 49ers would have received multiple draft picks for Harbuagh and a deal was in place between the teams. Harbaugh ultimately decided not to leave the 49ers.
Two sources from the 49ers denied the report to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Jed York publicly denied the report.
The Browns hired Mike Pettine.
Ray Farmer, general manager of the Cleveland Browns, already knows which quarterback he has first on his board.
"I've studied the quarterbacks and I've studied other players, and I've already started to formulate the rank and order of each position," Farmer said. "I do know what I'd do if I was held down at the moment. It doesn't mean that can't change, but I currently have somebody in front."
Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles are widely considered the top quarterback prospects in the draft.
"I'd say that No. 4 is not necessarily where I would take the guy that I like," Farmer said. "Again, it may not be the name that everybody thinks is the latest, greatest, and the easy one to spot. There's definitely an art to selecting people in the draft and it's finding the right name that fits who you want to be."
Brandon Weeden is looking forward to moving on from the Cleveland Browns in a fresh situation.
Weeden told The Oklahoman: "I want to play football. I don't care. I just want to play football and be at a place where it's enjoyable and we can compete and win games. That's really what it's all about."
The Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are three potential teams for Weeden.
The Cleveland Browns wanted Bill Parcells to run the front office.
Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi were recently let go by the Browns with Ray Farmer assuming general manager duties.
Parcells consulted with Jimmy Haslam extensively, but no job offer was reportedly made.
Parcells explained in an e-mail that he talked to the Browns "only about how I believe organizations succeed and others fail."
Parcells is 72 years old and hasn't been part of the game since running the front office of the Miami Dolphins.
Brandon Weeden would like a fresh start after two disappointing seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
Weeden was drafted in 2012, but the Browns have gone through two front offices during his tenure.
Alex Mack will certainly test free agency, but his odds of re-signing with the Cleveland Browns have increased with the changes made in the front office.
Mack and the previous regime had developed bad feelings due to lack of contract progress.
Mack was a Pro Bowl selection in 2010 and 2013.
The Cleveland Browns have overhauleld their front office, with Joe Banner and Michael Lombardi leaving the organization.
The Browns have promoted Ray Farmer from assistant general manager to general manager
Haslam added that president Alec Scheiner will continue to be in charge of the organization's business operations.
"The purpose of these moves is to unify our team with one, unequivocal goal: Provide our fans with the winning organization they have long deserved," Haslam said in a statement.
Lombardi had a brief second tenure with the Browns in which he kept a low profile.
"We're also grateful for Mike Lombardi's efforts and commitment since rejoining our organization," Haslam said. "He is an experienced and creative NFL executive with a unique ability to see the big picture. He has tremendous instincts and I know he'll be a valuable addition to any NFL organization. We simply wanted to give Ray this opportunity that he's earned. We wanted to move forward under his leadership and capabilities."
The Indianapolis Colts have hired Rob Chudzinski as special assistant to head coach Chuck Pagano.
Pagano and Chudzinski previously spent eight seasons together at the University of Miami and then the 2004 season with the Cleveland Browns.
