Panthers Release Charles Johnson

Mar 3, 2016 11:23 AM

The Carolina Panthers have released Charles Johnson.

The move clears $11 million in salary cap space as Johnson was set to count just over $15 million against the 2016 cap.

Carolina now has more than $26 million in cap space.

"Charles was an impact player for the Carolina Panthers for a long time, both on and off the field," general manager Dave Gettleman said in a release. "His statistics speak for themselves, and as a team captain he led the way you want your leaders to lead -- by example.

"I wish him the best moving forward."

The Panthers could still re-sign Johnson in free agency.

Mar 2, 2016 11:24 AM

The Carolina Panthers have placed the franchise tag on Josh Norman.

If the Panthers and Norman are unable to agree upon a long-term deal, he will play under a one-year salary of $13.952 million.

Norman emerged as one of the NFL's top cornerbacks this season.

Norman finished the 2015 season with four picks, two of which were returned for touchdowns. He added 48 tackles, three forced fumbles and 18 passes defensed to earn first-team All-Pro honors.
