The Arizona Cardinals have placed the "non-exclusive" franchise tag on Chandler Jones.

With the non-exclusive designation, Jones can sign an offer sheet with another team. If the Cardinals choose not to match, they would receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

The franchise tenders for linebackers will be about $15.3 million for the 2017 season. 

The Cardinals acquired Jones from the New England Patriots last offseason.

During a radio appearance this week, Michael Bidwill reiterated that the Arizona Cardinals will use their franchise tag on Chandler Jones.

"We're not going to mess around with that," Bidwill said, referring to the possibility of not retaining Jones, per the team's website. "He's a great pass rusher, but if we can't agree to terms that work for us, we're just going to franchise him. His people know that."

Jones was acquired from the New England Patriots last offseason in exchange for guard Jonathan Cooper and a second-round pick.

Jones had one of the best seasons of his career, recording 11 sacks and 66 quarterback pressures from his position as a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker.

The franchise tag values for those positions will likely range from $14.5 million to $16.5 million, depending on whether Jones is designated as a defensive end or a linebacker. 

Carson Palmer has confirmed he will continue his playing career in 2017.

Palmer had been considering retirement this offseason.

“My intent was to take some time after the season to get away and see where I was physically and mentally,” Palmer said. “On both fronts, I can say I’m ready to get back to work and prepare for the 2017 season. This is a phenomenal group with a very special opportunity in front of it.

“I know how rare that is and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it.”

Arizona would have had to guarantee his $15.5 million salary by Friday if he was still on their roster.

Bruce Arians is confident Carson Palmer will remain with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017.

I think he'll announce he's coming back real soon," Arians said during an appearance on ESPN's NFL Insiders on Friday. "I think it's just a matter of letting all the bumps and bruises heal, have a great time with the kids snow skiing ... and he'll be back."

Palmer is 37 and has been non-committal so far about his plans for 2017.

Palmer, who threw for 4,233 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2016, is scheduled to earn $17.5 million next season, but he is coming off a year in which he missed one game due to a concussion and also dealt with lingering hamstring soreness.

The Arizona Cardinals have interest in Deshaun Watson of Clemson and could even trade up to draft him.

If Carson Palmer decides to retire, Tyrod Taylor is a quarterback Bruce Arians could target.

The Cardinals finished 2016 with a 7-8-1 record after playing in the NFC Championship game in 2015.

Larry Fitzgerald says he will return to the Arizona Cardinals for his 14th season.

Fitzgerald has one year left on his contract.

The wide receiver had said earlier in the week he had "pretty much made up my mind" but wasn't ready to announce the decision, which he added wasn't a tough one to make.

The 33-year-old led the NFL in receptions this season with 107. He also leads active receivers in career receptions with 1,125.
