Belichick, Carroll, Payton Considered Best HC's In NFL By Peers

Sep 3, 2014 11:09 PM

Bill Belichick is ranked as the best coach in the NFL, according to a poll of 30 league insiders.

Pete Carroll and Sean Payton are ranked second and third and are also in their first tier.

"The most important thing to me is the ability to control the offense, the defense and the special teams," a GM said in describing the ideal coach. "You can change and you can coach multiple things and you have the ability to teach almost every position group. Then you can lose any coach you want and replace from within because the head coach is the talent. Belichick is the ultimate model of that."

Belichick commmanded a 1 vote on 28 of 30 ballots.

In Tier 2 are Andy Reid at No. 4, Tom Coughlin at No. 5, Mike McCarthy and Mike Tomlin at No. 6, Jim Harbaugh at No. 8, John Harbaugh at No. 9, John Fox at No. 10 , Jeff Fisher at No. 11, Chip Kelly at No. 12, Bruce Arians at No. 13, Lovie Smith at No. 14 and Mavin Lewis at No. 15.

Tier 3 is led by Chuck Pagano At No. 16, followed by Rex Ryan (17), Mike Smith (18), Gus Bradley (19), Ken Whisenhunt (20), Mike McCoy (20), Marc Trestman (22) and Ron Rivera (23).

Tier 4 features Mike Zimmer (24), Jay Gruden (25), Bill O'Brien (26), Jim Caldwell (27), Doug Marrone (28), Joe Philbin (29), Jason Garrett (30), Mike Pettine (31) and Bruce Allen (32).

Andre Ellington To Be Used Like Jamaal Charles

Aug 31, 2014 11:19 AM

The Arizona Cardinals will increase the usage of Andre Ellington in 2014, leading some to expect the second-year running back to become a fantasy darling.

"I think he's gonna be basically Jamaal Charles," Cardinals' game analyst Ron Wolfley said during the telecast of the preseason opener. "I think that probably is the best comparison."

Regarding Arians' prescription of 25 to 30 touches per game, Wolfley said, "I'll believe it when I see it."

"But at the same time," Wolfley added, "I was talking to some coaches, guys that I have an awful lot of regard and respect for on this team that believe he's a 2,000-yard per year player -- just like Charles, 70 receptions.

"They're going to get him the ball, they're going to do it in creative ways. ... He's a rare talent. He really is. Because there's not many running backs you can take and split them out."

John Brown Draws Comparisons To Boldin, Marvin Harrison

Oct 6, 2014 12:49 AM

John Brown has been very impressive in training camp and preseason with the Arizona Cardinals.

Brown was a third round draft pick out of Pittsburg State.

"I haven't seen a rookie come in and do what he's done -- and it's early still -- since Anquan Boldin," Steve Keim told Grantland's Robert Mays on Monday. "This guy came through the first day, and being from Pittsburg State, has uncanny instincts, unbelievable understanding of route concepts, leverage, being in the right spot at the right time. On top of great ball skills, he has unusual speed and explosiveness."

Ron Wolfley compared Brown to Marvin Harrison.

Jake Ballard Retires At Age Of 26

Sep 25, 2014 7:04 AM

Jake Ballard has retired from the NFL at the age of 26 after appearing in eight games last season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Ballard tore his ACL and eventually needed microfracture surgery following an injury during Super Bowl XLVI.

"Yesterday I made the difficult decision to retire from the game of football," Ballard said in a statement, via ProFootballTalk. "I love this game and have put my heart and soul into it for as long as I can remember. After sustaining a serious knee injury while playing for the New York Giants in the Super Bowl, my body never felt the same.

"Having a quality of life after football is very important to me and I have witnessed it taken away from others. I will miss the game tremendously, but I am ready for this next chapter in my life."

Sherman: Feud With Peterson 'All Fun', Crabtree Beef Is Different

Sep 3, 2014 5:35 AM

Richard Sherman and Patrick Peterson have taken verbal shots at each other on Twitter, but it is all in good fun.

"It's all fun," Sherman said Monday on 710 ESPN Seattle. "We're just trying to see who's the most clever. We're friends. We've known each other since the [NFL] combine [in 2011]. We've worked out together and he's a great dude."

Sherman's situation with Michael Crabtree is far more real.

"Much, much different," Sherman said.

Sherman was asked Monday whether he would have handled the postgame interview differently had Crabtree shaken his hand.

"That's probably true," Sherman said. "The animosity would still be there, but I probably wouldn't have gone off on him like that. But he didn't [shake my hand]."
