Brian Hoyer Returns To Field Assuming He's Browns' Starting QB

May 18, 2014 1:11 AM

Brian Hoyer was back on the field with the Cleveland Browns for the first time since tearing a knee ligament in October.

"Until someone tells me otherwise," he said, "I feel like I'm the starter for this team."

Hoyer hurt his knee in his third start for the Browns.

Some six months later, Hoyer was active and assertive on the field, clearly acting like he belonged as the team's starter.

Jets To Give Geno Smith Most First-Team Reps In OTAs

May 18, 2014 12:11 AM

The New York Jets will give Geno Smith the most first-team reps at quarterback over Michael Vick.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg expects a harmonious competition.

"I think this thing will work beautifully," Mornhinweg said Tuesday, speaking to reporters for the first time since Vick signed last month. "I expect Geno to progress at a high rate with Mike's help. It's just that simple."

Smith said last week he expects to be the opening-day quarterback after an inconsistent rookie season.

Jameis Winston Cited For Forgetting To Pay For Groceries

May 15, 2014 1:22 AM

Jameis Winston was issued a civil citation after sheriff's deputies say he walked out of a supermarket without paying for $32 worth of crab legs and crawfish.

Leon County Sheriff's Maj. Michael Wood said Wednesday that the 20-year-old Winston ordered the food at the deli in a Tallahassee, Fla.,-area Publix on Tuesday night. After receiving the order, he left the store without paying.

Wood said Publix employees called deputies, who went to Winston's apartment.

Wood said Winston acknowledged not paying for the food, saying he forgot.

After consulting with Publix managers, deputies issued Winston a civil citation that will require him to complete at least 20 hours of community service. If he does that, no criminal charges will be filed.

Gruden Doesn't Expect Many Read-Option Plays For Griffin

Oct 8, 2014 8:30 AM

Jay Gruden doesn't plan on using the read-option with much frequency for Robert Griffin III in the Washington Redskins' offense.

Gruden has acknowledged the quarterback’s capabilities and the success that the Redskins have had in the past running those schemes. But he has stressed the importance of developing a well-rounded attack tailored to the strengths of Griffin and his teammates.

“We’ll have sprinkles here and there,” Gruden said. “It’s not going to be a major part. I want to make sure that we have other things that we can do besides the read option, because it takes a toll. You have to practice it a lot to be very good at it. It kind of takes away from the defense’s ability a little bit, it takes away from other plays that you need to work on, your protection schemes, your running game, all that stuff. It just takes away from that. So we want to make sure that we work on the core running game that we have, the core drop-back passes we have. And then once we get going, we get those implemented, maybe sprinkle in some read option.”

Lurie: Eagles Released DeSeason Jackson As 'Football Decision'

Sep 25, 2014 7:15 AM

Chip Kelly has received the support of Philadelphia Eagles' owner Jeffrey Lurie in the decision to release DeSean Jackson.

The Eagles have denied the decision as being anything more than a "football decision."

"It was really a football decision," Lurie told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Chip and his people were incredibly clear that for us to get better we need to take a step back and reconfigure the wide receiver position. I think common to a lot of really smart coaches, he knows exactly what he wants at every position. And for Chip on offense, it just wasn't a good fit. It just was not a good fit with what he asks wide receivers to do."
