Jackson's High School AD, Counselor Refuse Gang Allegations

Oct 15, 2014 6:15 PM

DeSean Jackson's high school athletic director and counselor came to his defense against allegations of gang affiliations.

"DeSean is a great guy -- he was a sweet kid when he was in high school, always very polite and respectful with me," said Debbie Hughes, Jackson's counselor at Long Beach Poly, according to the Press Telegram. "There was no gang activity with him. He wasn't in a gang. That's not to say other students weren't, but DeSean definitely wasn't one of them."

Rob Shock, the Poly AD added: "Every single year during his bye week he comes back and talks to the kids and goes to a game. He's always had a big heart -- it just feels like somebody out there is trying to tear him down. ... DeSean hasn't done anything, he hasn't committed any crimes."

Former Poly coach Raul Lara was quoted in the NJ.com story as saying Jackson "started to hang around some not-so-good people" after his father died, said his comments were taken out of context and had nothing to do with gang affiliations.

"Gangbanger, what the hell is that about? He's not a gangbanger," Lara told the PressTelegram.com. "All I was saying was that it was a tragic part of his life when his father died," Lara said. "He's not a gangbanger, I don't know where they're getting that from, and I didn't say that he was. I was close with his dad and I know that when his dad passed it really hit him."

Titans Unlikely To Pick Up Option On Jake Locker

Nov 11, 2014 7:34 AM

The Tennessee Titans aren't likely to pick up the option year on Jake Locker's contract for 2015.

The Titans could consider giving Locker a new contract after the 2014 season, but they clearly don't trust him enough to pick up his option now.

The Titans have Charlie Whitehurst as Locker's backup and they could look at the draft for another quarterback.

Cowboys Want Morris Claiborne To Get Stronger In Offseason

Dec 15, 2014 7:41 PM

The Dallas Cowboys hope to get better play at cornerback in 2014 in the form of an improved Morris Claiborne.

“We feel like he is a guy who is very talented and still needs to grow and develop,’’ head coach Jason Garrett said. “He has certainly shown flashes of the player that we drafted with the sixth pick of the draft a couple of years ago. He has a very good feel for covering guys and just plays that position at a high level. We have a lot of confidence in Mo.’’

The Cowboys want Claiborne to get physically stronger.

Ryan Clark Visits Seahawks

Oct 12, 2014 6:54 PM

The Seattle Seahawks hosted Ryan Clark for a visit on Friday, but he left without a deal.

Clark has also drawn interest from the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens.

Clark may be an odd fit for the Seahawks considering how infrequently Chris Maragos played last season behind Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor.

Woodson: Al Davis Would Have Signed DeSean Jackson

Oct 15, 2014 3:30 PM

The Oakland Raiders have interest in signing DeSean Jackson, a move that Charles Woodson endorses.

"Bring him in, I think he would look good in the Silver and Black," Woodson told KGMZ-FM last week, per ESPN.com. "Of course I know the business side of it, but I've watched this guy and what he is, is a dynamic football player."

Jackson was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.

"There is no question in my mind that this is the type of player that Al would bring in," Woodson said. "You hear about the off-field stuff but I don't think Al would concern himself with that too much. I think Al would do his homework. But I think he would take a serious hard look, and if there was an opportunity I think he would bring that guy in.

"DeSean can stretch the field, and we know how much Al loved having guys that can stretch the field. So I don't think there is any question he would bring him in."

Jets Have Lowest Cash Payroll In NFL At $86.1M

Oct 29, 2014 4:51 PM

The New York Jets currently have the lowest cash payroll in the NFL at $86.1 million.

Their once-top-heavy cap has thinned to the point where only three players have cap charges of at least $7 million -- D'Brickashaw Ferguson ($11.7 million), Nick Mangold ($7.2 million) and David Harris ($7 million).

John Idzik has systematically dumped many of the Jets' highest salaries.

NFL 'Not There Yet' On L.A. Proposals

Oct 15, 2014 3:30 PM

An NFL team in Los Angeles remains a far off possibility despite uncertain situations for the Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars.

“We’ve been very open that if we had the right opportunity to be back in Los Angeles with the right formula — meaning a stadium — most importantly,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. “We know there are millions of fans who want a team there. We would love to do that, but it has to be successful.

“We are going to do it right if we are going to do it. There are different proposals out there and different opportunities, but not one that we are focused on and can say that we have the right solution yet. We’re not there.”

Mark Davis, owner of the Raiders, has talked openly about Los Angeles as a possible future home.

The Bills have a stadium lease that runs through 2022, and for the next six years it will cost $400 million to break that lease. But it only costs $28 million to break the least in 2020.
